(Tuesday Treasure Chest)
It is extremely important that we become and remain people of God’s Word. It is not just that we are aware of what it says, and the revelations that it contains – we must continually focus on it and allow it to point us to the Lord as well as to direct, feed and strengthen us every day. Jesus, in His first temptation in the desert, stresses the importance of it in our lives, both in times of temptation and more generally as well – and notice His inclusion of the little word ‘every!’
“Jesus answered, “It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” (Matthew 4:4)
Reading the Word does not necessarily feed us unless the words and truths become a part of our lives and faith. It is, therefore, very helpful to commit to memory a selection of verses from Scripture – verses that we can review from time to time, reflect upon, pray about and draw upon in times of need. These verses can constitute our Treasure Chest from which we can draw for ourselves, and others, as we need or desire.
This verse can be very helpful as a daily reminder and focus.
“I Love You” – becomes a constant reminder of our decision and need to place God first at every moment and in every situation that we face. Our choice, and in response to the Great Commandment, is to have Him as the first priority in our lives. It also reminds us that we love Him because ‘He first loved us!’ We are His priority – and there is no clearer indication of this than the great statement of our Lord’s – and note that little word ‘so!’
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“O Lord” – is the focus for our love and service. He is God Almighty – the Trinity of God the Eternal Father, God the Son our Saviour and God the Holy Spirit who is with us and within us always. He is the God who had no beginning and has no end, the glorious and supreme Majesty who has desired us and sacrificed Himself for us so that we might receive, enjoy and respond to His Love. Our lives and work become an offering to Him.
“My strength” – is our acknowledgement that without God we have nothing and cannot achieve anything of any great value. It is God in us who equips, empowers and enables us to live the life to which He has called us, and to do so in a fallen and unbelieving world. He gives us the love, the faith, the strength and the perseverance that we need – and from Him too comes the peace that passes understanding and the joy that is beyond any momentary happiness of the world.
(Suggestion): Start your Treasure Chest. Make a file in your computer and copy to it the picture above. Write the words into your diary (or somewhere that you will see them often). Learn them, say them, pray them through the week – and let them guide your thoughts, words and actions. Live them.
Lord God, please help me to love You more and to have you as my first priority, to do everything as an offering to You, and to look to You for all that I will need every day this week. Thank You so much for Your great love for, me. Amen.
