Called by God

“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith.”

(1 Timothy 6:11-12)

Paul is concluding his first letter to Timothy. He does so in the best possible way – not by referring to his weaknesses but reminding him of who he is, and is called to be, in the Lord. Timothy – man of God. Timothy would have known it to be one of the great titles of the Old Testament, and one given, amongst others, to Moses and Samuel.

To be called Man of God is a title of honour. Paul’s intention would have been to remind him of and confirm to him the honour bestowed upon him in his Christian calling. It was to help him to focus on his potential and what God was intending to do in, through and around him. It was a call to stand tall in the Lord and step forward – instead of cringing in a self-focussed unworthiness and inadequacy.

Each one of us who has been blessed to acknowledge Christ as our Saviour and Lord has become a man or woman of God. We are known to God, accepted by God and anointed with His Holy Spirit. God now has a plan and purpose for our lives. It is not what we will do for Him but what He will do in us, for us and through us. We are called to travel with God and to follow His direction.

We are honoured indeed to be the sons and daughters, and the women and men, of the Lord God Almighty. This is not because we are worth it but because He is. Let us live for His glory.

Think about this honour over the weekend – decide what difference it makes to your life.

Thank you Father for loving me, saving me, calling me and honouring me. Help me to delight in Your love and live to Your honour and glory. Amen.
