“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

(Hebrews 11:6)

The revelation of God in Scripture, and through Jesus Christ, is that His great desire is to bless His people. No one could have done more, and at such great personal cost. From the creation to the cross it is the account of His love, blessing and provision. Where His anger and judgement are revealed it is because He has been rejected and disobeyed. This only took place after repeated warnings and calls for the nation to repent and return to Him. He has always been ready to forgive.

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbour his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:8-12)

The great sin is for people who should know better to treat God as if He does not exist or is irrelevant, and to go off and pursue their own devices and desires. This happened with Adam and Eve and happened again and again with the Israelites. In each case it amounted to a rejection of God – and of His majesty, holiness and love. It still does.

Faith begins with believing that God exists – even if our knowledge about Him is confused and limited. Faith continues with the belief that God will respond to those who are sincere in seeking Him.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13)

Faith leads us to find out more about God and the possibilities of our relationship with Him. It leads us to the discovery that to take Him truly seriously is to begin to live our lives according to His directions. This both acknowledges Him as God and opens the way to a deeper and more significant relationship with Him.

“Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” (John 14:23)

Seek (more of) God through prayer and the Bible. Remember that He is a Person not a set of laws!

Heavenly Father, please open my spirit to the wonder and truth of Your love. Help me to draw closer to You and please draw closer to me. Amen.
