Renewed Minds

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action”

(1 Peter 1:13)

Reflection:

Christians have a wonderful eternal future to which they look forward. But we also have an immediate presence and future in which we have to live, witness and minister. To be faithful and effective we need minds that are both informed and formed.

Firstly, and as men and women of the Word, we need to become very familiar with the word of God in Scripture. It is a Spirit-breathed and precious gift, and an invaluable source of instruction and inspiration, helping us to perceive what is true and what is false.

“from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  (2 Timothy 3:15-17)

Secondly, and as disciples of Christ, we require minds and lives that have been re-formed by the Word and the Spirit. For this we need to have examined, studied and prayerfully pondered Scripture to find its deep truths, its application in our lives and its commentary on and message to the world and context in which we live. We should more and more live out the guidance that it gives. It is through the study and application of the Word that we become increasingly ‘wise for salvation’ and ‘equipped for every good work.’

Along the road we may find many challenges to our existing opinions and attitudes as well as deeply exciting new revelations and understandings. All of these will contribute to our entering more fully into the Truth that sets us free and enable us to be of more value to those around us. In it our vision and appreciation of our wonderful Lord Jesus will grow larger and deeper.

Response:

Have a daily Bible-reading program. Also prayerfully grapple with Jesus’ teachings as personal messages. Check your thoughts, attitudes and actions against Scripture. Love the journey as you discern things that need pruning or weeding out and discover beauty and strength waiting to be planted..

Prayer:

Father God how privileged I am to be Your child – and to have easy access to the Bible and helpful commentaries and teachings. Please guide me and help me to make the most of them – in Jesus name. Amen.
