I Belong!

Cross 1

“But you are ..  a holy nation, a people belonging to God”

(1 Peter 2:9)

In God’s eyes and expectations Christians are ‘a holy nation.’ By holy He means different from the other nations of the world. We belong not to an earthly kingdom but to a heavenly one. First and foremost we are living members of the Kingdom of God. Our first allegiance is to God. We take our primary instructions from God Himself and live to the model that He gave to us in Jesus Christ.

Although Jesus entered into and lived in the world He was clearly different and this was apparent to those around Him, including the religious leaders.

We get a clear picture in God’s charge to the Israelites from Mount Sinai when He was about to enter into a covenant with them.

“Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” (Exodus 19:5-6)

The Israelite nation was to belong to God and in that relationship they would be His ‘treasured possession.’ So it is with Christians. We too, in terms of the new covenant with God in Jesus Christ belong to God.

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

Just as the Israelites were required to ‘obey me fully and keep My covenant’ so Christians too are expected to live in obedience to the directions of God. This is not to earn our salvation from Him but rather our willing response to the wonderful act of loving grace through which He has already redeemed us. It is also a recognition that His Way is the only way to the fullness of life and love both now and through all eternity.

“Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” (John 14:21)

Dwell on God’s glorious vision for you – and enter (more fully) into it. You are holy and belong to God!

Lord I come to You. Please help me to come more fully and willingly, trusting Your great Love and eternal Truth that has embraced even me. Amen.
