Shallow Living

Rain 5

“Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.”

(Luke 8:6)

Reflection:

Seeds need moisture if they are to grow and develop to their full potential. If not some of them may spring up and then wither and die.

Sometimes we may hear a word from God that seems to speak to us and which gives us hope. However if it is not treasured and nourished by prayer and attention it may soon shrivel out of our lives. It is so easy to merely read the words of Scripture and to get some of the story without receiving their message for us and without pressing on to engage more deeply with the Author Himself. Jesus criticised the religious leaders of His time for this.

“You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”  (John 5:39-40)

The Word of God cannot flourish if it is kept on the surface of our lives. The Living Word seeks to enter into the very heart of our lives, even into our spirits, and there to bring new and flourishing life.

Pray over God’s word each day. Seek to own the words and insights that He gives to you. Treasure them and return to them again and again. Ask Him to keep opening them to you and to draw you into a deeper relationship with Him.

Response:

Start now with this one. A Prayer Journal in which to record them is helpful.

Prayer:

Father Your Words and revelation are vital to my life and living. Help me to ask for, seek, find and treasure the truth that You wish me to know. Amen.
