God only Wise

2014.06.25

“Who has understood the mind of the LORD,
or instructed him as his counsellor?

Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him,
and who taught him the right way?

Who was it that taught him knowledge
or showed him the path of understanding?”

(Isaiah 40:13-14)

Reflection:
God is infinitely wise. All knowledge and wisdom rests in Him. If this were not the case He would not be God. So when He came to create He had no need to look for outside or additional knowledge or advice – and in fact there was none. God knew what He wanted to create, how He wanted to create it and what He wanted to plant within His creation.

“By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.” (Proverbs 3:19-20)
• “God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.” (Jeremiah 10:12)
• “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:3)

God’s wisdom and knowledge, and with them His supreme power, extend beyond His creative acts. He is able to control and sustain His creation, develop it and extend it. He is also able to work within and around the natural laws that He has established.

All and everything that man has discovered or invented has come from this creation. It was known to God and included in His creating in the beginning. All that is still hidden from us and waiting to be discovered is known to God and was included in His creating in the beginning.

God’s knowledge extends to all and everything. He knows the end of things because He has planned it that way. He also knows the inner thoughts, motives, fears and longings within us – each and every one of us. There is nothing about us that He does not know fully.

“O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.” (Psalm 139:1-4)

Paul was moved to exclaim,

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counsellor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Romans 11:33-36)

Response:

“O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1)

Prayer:

Open my eyes Lord that I may catch even a glimpse of Your glory. Amen.
