The Heavens Declare

“Lift your eyes and look to the heavens”

(Isaiah 40:26)

Reflection:
One of the disadvantages of the modern age is that in the town and cities we no longer see the heavens in all their glory. To travel into the country and to look up into the night sky is to be rendered speechless at the wonder, majesty and splendour of God that is revealed.

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
(Psalm 19:1)

We so easily soak in the silent speech of our surroundings. If those are primarily the product of human minds, hands and desires then they can have a very limiting effect on our view of God. On top of that the news that impacts our eyes, ears and minds tends towards the sensational, violent and artificial. We can associate with the cry of the psalmist,

“As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?”
(Psalm 42:1-2)

Just as Isaiah was urging his people to remind themselves of God’s glory, power and majesty so do we need to remind ourselves. The beauty and wonder of creation is an important part of it. Others would include the Scriptures themselves, the biographies of the men and women of God in different ages, and time spent in prayerful worship and contemplation of this great and glorious God Who is pleased to call Himself ‘Our Father.’

Lord help me to see Your hand in the wonder of Your creation, to find Your truth in the blessing of Scripture and to know Your presence in the silence of prayer. Amen.
