Properly Dressed

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Put on the full armour of God
so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

(Ephesians 6:10-11)

Reflection:
roman soldier Having put off the old self and clothed ourselves with the new one there is still another important step to take.

To Paul ‘the devil’s schemes’ are powerful, wicked and cunning – and we are too weak and naive to stand against them. It is no wonder then that he cautions us to look to the Lord and His mighty power, and to clothe ourselves in the armour that He will provide – for it is only in God’s power and under His protection that we will prevail. Jesus has already demonstrated His supremacy over the devil and all his servants and powers. The Victory is already His and He will complete it by totally banishing all evil and evil powers when He chooses that the time has come to do so. Until then we need to find our protection, strength and peace in drawing as close as possible to God and His will – and remaining there.

Our new self needs to be clothed with ‘the belt of truth,’ ‘the breastplate of righteousness,’ the shoes of the gospel, ‘the shield of faith,’ ‘the helmet of salvation’ and ‘the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.’ These need to be covered by Spirit-guided prayer on all occasions.

Life, and our relationship with the Lord, cannot be treated as a casual affair. It is far too important for that.

Response:
Acknowledge your vulnerability and trust in God and all that He provides for you.

Prayer:

Lord help me to stay close to You and to live my life in and through You. Amen.
