“Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

(John 20:28)

Reflection:
The Jesus whom we honour as King and Lord is also God – revealed to us as God the Son. He is the second member of the Holy Trinity of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit – three persons and yet one God. The oneness of God is important. Jesus Himself re-affirmed the revelation to Israel when in response to the question of which was the greatest commandment He referred to Deuteronomy 6:4,

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: `Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”(Mark 12:29-30)

Jesus would also say

“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)
• “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)

The religious leaders had no doubt that He was “making Himself equal with God” (John 5:18). And Paul wrote later about Him,

“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Philippians 2:6-7)

Beyond this, during His life and ministry He exercised the power and authority of God in His own name.  He forgave sins, healed the sick, raised the dead and drove out evil spirits at His own word and command.

As God He gave commands to His followers and expected to be heard and obeyed. He still does.

Response:
My Lord and my God – in spirit and in truth

Prayer:

Lord Jesus please help me to live out my belief in You to Your honour and glory. Amen
