“When Herod realized that he had been outwitted
by the Magi, he was furious,
and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem
and its vicinity who were two years old and under.”
Children were always very precious to Jesus. He would not let them be kept away from Him but insisted that they be allowed free access to Him.
“When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” (Mark 10:14-16)
He would have known how some of them had suffered as Herod tried to eliminate Him. Indeed it had been prophesied through Jeremiah,
“This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more.” (Jeremiah 31:15)
Children have continued to be used, abused and massacred down through the ages and into our present times. Let us never for a moment think that God is unmoved and uncaring. Not one of them has been or will be forgotten – nor will their suffering or those who caused it. God is both loving and just, and it all comes together for us in Jesus – who Himself was a child.
Treasure and pray for the children around you – and for those whose suffering is reported. Pray too for the healing of our society.
Father forgive us all for the abuse of the children whom You love so much. Protect them Lord and help us to do the same. Amen.
