“Yet to all who received him,
to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God”
Jesus brings change. Wherever we find Him He is bringing change into the lives of people. Some of it is of the body, as in the healings that He performed. However, His real purpose with an eternal and life changing dimension is the change that He brings to our identity and relationship with Almighty God. From sinners and outcasts – rebels and enemies of God, men, women and children of the darkness, destined for eternal separation from both God and our true selves – He transforms us into people of light, life and love. We do not become angels or a new class of immigrants into heaven – we become, in an astonishingly real and permanent way the children, the sons and daughters, of the Living God. We become who we were always meant to be.
This glorious re-birth is effected within us by the Holy Spirit, again taking the expressed will and desire of God and bringing it into reality.
“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” (Romans 8:15-16)
We live in a world in which increasing numbers of people are feeling lost and of no value – where men, women and children strive for the fleeting significance bestowed on them by the world, where relationships become dry and lifeless, and where whole communities are impoverished physically, emotionally and mentally. But to those who have come to the Saviour, who have reached out to Him and accepted Him into their lives, who have put their hope and trust in Him, a new day has dawned, a new world had begun. Whatever may still happen to them in terms of this world, they now belong in a new way and have a significance which no one is able to take from them. They are the sons and daughters of God, the Almighty Father; they are the loved ones in whom He delights; they are the ones for whom the death of Christ on the Cross of Calvary has brought new and eternal life.
If you are a Christian you are someone very special and of great significance – and you are eternally safe within the loving hands of the Father.
Write it in your diary under your name – “a son/daughter of the Living God.” Thank God every day.
Heavenly Father, thank You so very much that You have chosen me to be Your child. Thank You Lord Jesus for dying for me on the cross. Thank You Holy Spirit for coming to live within me, bringing me into the new life of Christ. Please help me to believe and accept my new identity and to live my life for God. Amen.
