“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

(Ephesians 2:10)

We know that Jesus was raised from the dead, that He ascended into heaven and that He is seated there at God’s right hand. Now Paul is saying that this has happened to us also. We have also been ‘made alive’, God has ‘raised us up’ and He has ‘seated us with Him in the heavenly realms.’ This is all through our new and eternal relationship with Jesus Himself. We have been taken from death to life, from slavery to honour and from condemnation to commendation.

All this happened because of God’s ‘great love for us’, because He is ‘rich in mercy’ and so that He can ‘show the incomparable riches of His grace.’ It is all God’s gift to us and has nothing whatsoever to do with any action or labour on our part. There is no aspect of it that we deserve or about which we can boast. It is love, mercy and grace from start to finish.

In this all we have become ‘God’s workmanship.’ We represent His work of art, in fact His masterpiece. We are now a ‘new creation’ with a purpose that is consequential on our new identity and relationship. That is ‘to do good works’ – not just any good works but those that God planned and purposed for us when He planned for all this to take place. We have eternal significance.

Given new and eternal life, drawn into the most intimate relationship with God, secure in His love, given a dignity and with a God-given purpose – we have so much! It only remains for us to believe, accept and live this new life.  – in the strength of the Holy Spirit whom He has given to us. The door to our cell is open, the journey awaits. The first step out is to begin to accept our new identity in Christ – sinners who are forgiven, slaves who are set free, people with a purpose and beloved children of the Most High God. It starts (again) right where we are – now.

As a Christian of new birth I am a daughter/son of our Heavenly Father, the Lord God Almighty.

Holy Spirit, please witness to my spirit the truth of my salvation in Jesus! Please lift me up by Your presence within. Amen.
