Fully Understood

2015.05.28

“O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.”

(Psalm 139:1-4)

Reflection:
There is something wonderfully liberating and re-assuring in the awareness that there is someone who knows us completely, deeply and intimately – who knows us far better than we have even begun to know ourselves – and who looks at us without any misunderstanding and without requiring any explanations – where we are “fully known” (1 Corinthians 13:12).

There are times when we will want to turn to God and pour out our hearts to Him. There will also be others when, in confusion, pain or loneliness, we might turn to Him and, because we haven’t the knowledge or the words, say simply and urgently, “Lord, please read me!” Then in the silence that follows we allow Him to turn over the pages of our lives – physical, spiritual, mental and emotional – and fully absorb our reality.

These are very special moments for God. For we are not only saying that we cannot find the words – we are also telling Him that we want Him to know, and that we trust Him to know everything, to fully understand and to lovingly respond. In fact they will be moments promoted by the Spirit Himself –

“the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.” (Romans 8:26-27)

God knows – God cares – God loves. Wonderful – isn’t He!

Response:
Be still – and know that I am God.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You so very much for knowing me fully, loving me deeply and holding me in Your hand. Amen.
