Pleasing to God

“So we make it our goal to please him”

(2 Corinthians 5:9)

Reflection:
The greatest decision in life is whether to please God or to please ourselves. It is the challenge that faced Eve and Adam in the Garden of Eden and Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The answer in each case revealed who was the more important – as it does with us as well.

To please God we must believe that He exists as the Lord God Almighty; acknowledge that we have sinned against Him through faithlessness and disobedience; honour His love and grace in the great salvation brought about through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ His Son; put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour; seek to live in the obedience that flows from faith; and live a life of love towards God and others.

It is not a blind or unwilling obedience but an acknowledgement and acceptance that, as God, He is entitled to direct the way in which He wishes us to live and respond to Him. It is also an acknowledgement that as the all-powerful God of love His way will be the best way for us and for others.

It is essentially the challenge laid down before the Israelites at Sinai and the response expected by Jesus in His teaching on the Vine. We honour God by living and loving His way. We please Him by doing so willingly.

Response:
God is worth pleasing – because He is God and because of His great love for us

Prayer:

Father, You have made us a priority in Your life – please help me to make You the priority in mine. Amen.
