“Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him.”
When Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden they were naked – until the Lord Himself clothed them with garments He had made from skin. These were suitable for the hard world and life that lay ahead of them because of their sin.
However there is a different garment in store for the penitent sinner who turns away from his sins and returns to the Lord. The account of the Lost Son’s homecoming is startling with the revelation of the Father’s response.
• “Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him.”
Only the best is good enough for a child of God, and that is who we have become through faith in Jesus Christ – a son or daughter of the Lord God Almighty. Now we are not clothed in the clothes of hard labour but in the best clothes to be found in the Lord’s house. And the ‘best robe’ that is brought out for us is the one that belongs to the Father Himself – the one that He would use on very special occasions.
A robe of light instead of the shabby garments of sin, a robe of beauty and grace instead of the tatters of shame and darkness, a robe of peace and joy instead of the threadbare linen of fear and insecurity, ‘and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair’. God is giving us the best – don’t hold onto the worst.
Close your eyes and look into the mirror of the Holy Spirit. Let Him show you who you have become.
Open my eyes Lord and help me to see myself as You see me in Jesus Christ – and to live in that revelation. Amen.
