“For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
Our new identity in Christ – as Christians – is not merely a matter of words. It is not a contract entered into at arm’s length and referred to from time to time. It carries no certificate to vouch for its authenticity. It comes with a different kind of seal and guarantee – the presence of God Himself.
“Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory” (Ephesians 1:13-14)
The Holy Spirit is not an optional extra but a vital part of our salvation, our new identity and our new life. Indeed Paul has stated that ‘if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.’ (Romans 8:9) Jesus Himself talks of our being ‘born again’ and ‘born of the Spirit.’ (John 3: 3&5)
It is in fact the Holy Spirit Himself who draws us to God, shows us our deep need, reveals to us the glorious salvation gained for us through Jesus Christ, and enables us to perceive, receive and respond to the astounding love of God for us. Our new identity is all about our relationship with God – and from that comes a healed relationship with ourselves and a new understanding of those around us. It is not something we achieve through our own endeavour. It is the grateful acceptance of a gift, the gift of a Person who enters into our lives and invites us to enter into His.
Dwell on the truth of the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life.
Holy Spirit thank You for Your presence in my life. Please open my eyes more fully to the truth and reality of God’s love for me – and help me to know, trust and live in His love. Amen.
