Spirit of God

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me”
(Luke 4:18)

Reflection:
Jesus knew that the Holy Spirit was ‘on’ Him. He had received the Spirit at His baptism, been led by the Spirit into the desert and returned ‘in the power of the Spirit.’ The presence of the Holy Spirit in His life was a reality of which He was very aware.

The Holy Spirit is also God’s gift to us as believers.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever– the Spirit of truth …. he lives with you and will be in you” (John 14:16-17)
• “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 1:13)
• “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ” (Romans 8:9)
• “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children” (Romans 8:16)

The question of identity is not one of wishful thinking but of certainty. Jesus knew who He was and God affirmed Him in that relationship on a number of important occasions. The Father wants us to know that we are His children and to be enabled to live out that relationship. We should be able to move from wanting to believing to knowing. That is where the Holy Spirit is so important.

Response:
Ask for the Spirit’s witness to your spirit.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit please help me to be open to Your blessing and ministry and to know the quiet certainty of my relationship with the Father. Amen.
