In God’s Hand

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
(Isaiah 9:2)

Reflection:
This great and well-known prophecy precedes the glorious words that leave us in no doubt about its subject,

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”

(Isaiah 9:6-7)

And now, with the birth of Christ, it is to be fulfilled. Matthew starts his gospel with the words, “A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:” (Matthew 1:1)

The angel Gabriel tells Mary,

“You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” (Luke 1:31-33)

We, who have the benefit of looking back over the life of Jesus, and with ready access to the Scriptures, can see the marvellous and majestic plan of God unfolding before us. Jesus, the Son of God, enters the world to be its Saviour and its Lord and King. He has taken history in His mighty grasp and is shaping it to His own ends. His will is being done on earth as it is done in heaven. And although His enemies rose up against Him and crucified Him under the words, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews” (John 19:19) He was to confound them by rising again and ascending in glory to the right hand of God. He will truly “reign … forever” and “His kingdom will never end.”

When we see the word of God and the hand of God working with such power and majesty, we are encouraged to trust and believe in the One who says to us,

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14:1-3)

Whatever humankind may do to try and establish a self-centred independence is held between the boundaries set by God. He is both the beginning and the end. Man’s efforts will be doomed to tragic failure. God’s intentions will be revealed in glorious fulfillment – a fulfillment of love, grace and power that is already revealed in Christ for those with the eyes to see.

Response:
Ask God to increase your belief and your faith in Him.

Prayer:

Come Lord Jesus, today and every day, into my heart and into my life and living. Amen.
