“In the same way, let your light shine before men,
that they may see your good deeds
and praise your Father in heaven.”
“You are the light of the world” Jesus taught His followers, and immediately went on to say that this light should be allowed to “shine before men.” He showed that a light is not supposed to be hidden, but is placed where it will best achieve its purpose of bringing light to the surrounding areas.
Wherever we happen to be in our lives at the moment is the place where God wishes that light to become evident. It is not just the light of appearance, as in a cheerful smile, but is also revealed in what we do and the way that we do it. Our new life shines out in the way that we live our lives, conduct our relationships, meet our challenges, and undertake our responsibilities. Our lives are to proclaim the gospel more effectively than our mouths.
So much of the world in which we live, and the worlds within the people around us, are in darkness. By turning up our light even slightly we enable God to make a difference through us, which may bring great blessing to someone, or some situation. To hide behind our embarrassment is to care more about ourselves than about God or our neighbour – which somehow does not fit with the two Great Commandments. Commandments are those actions that we are not asked to do but instructed and expected to live. If more Christians lived their faith and commitment more visibly the world would be a different place – and so would we!
Examine the sermon of your living, and make some adjustments.
Holy Spirit, please continue pouring the love of God into my heart, and help me to pour it out wherever I am and whatever I am doing. Amen.
