“Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet;
his whole body is clean.
And you are clean”
Jesus was washing the feet of the disciples. Peter, outraged at the sight and thought of Jesus degrading Himself in this way, objected. For all his love and loyalty the one thing that Peter could not yet do was to leave the Lord alone to act as He pleased. So when Jesus tells him that
“Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” (John 13:8)
Peter immediately wanted Jesus to do even more for him. Saying “Then, Lord.. not just my feet but my hands and my head as well.” Jesus response was to tell him that the rest of him was already clean.
The disciples would have been well aware of the custom that before attending a feast the guests would have bathed. Then after they had walked to the venue in their sandals all that was required was for a slave to wash their feet of the dust and dirt that had settled there on the journey.
All this is very important for us. Jesus speaking with the full knowledge of His impending death on the cross told His disciples that they were ‘already clean.’ That is that the guilt and stain and judgement in respect of their sins had already been taken away from them.
“You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.” (John 15:3)
They had been cleansed through their fellowship with the Lord and by His teaching. They had believed and received Him and His word – even although their understanding was still imperfect. This was the life and word of the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. They were no longer spiritually filthy and separated from God. This was sealed and ratified in the Lord’s great sacrifice.
What was true for them then is true for His present day disciples as well – for you and for me. As we come to the Lord, listen to and receive His word and entrust Him with our lives – however small our faith may be at the time – we too are washed and made clean – completely.
In terms of our relationship with God nothing now stands between us. The past has been dealt with fully and finally on the cross. We need to let it go and to focus instead on the Lord of our present and future.
As Christians we have been cleansed. Believe it and receive it in your relationship with the Lord.
Lord God in Jesus Christ my Lord and my Saviour all the sin and stain of my former life has been washed away and I am clean. Thank You so very much. Lord I believe – help my unbelief. Amen.
