“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ”
Election is a mystery that Scripture reveals but does not clarify. It is a divine revelation not mere human speculation. It reveals something of God’s purpose and intention from the beginning. Of His own free will God elected to choose Israel out of all the nations to be His special people. Again in the New Testament revelation He elected to choose an international community to be His saints – His special and holy people.
God exercised His free will in this way ‘before the creation of the world’ when only He existed in the unity and perfection of His being. In doing so He chose us before we existed and put us together in His mind with Jesus – ‘He chose us in Him.’
In choosing us ‘to be holy and blameless in His sight’ the passage indicates that that was not the way in which He thought about us then. He obviously knew that the fall was going to take place and that we would in fact deserve judgement and not adoption. But He had a further plan in mind that arose out of His great love.
For it was ‘in love’ that He predestined us for adoption as His sons and daughters. As these first verses make clear it was all God’s grace, God’s love, God’s will, God’s purpose and God’s choice. And we are the ones that He desired to bless and to have as His own.
My salvation and holiness is God’s will for me
Lord thank You so much that You have chosen me and persevered with me – and that You always will. Amen.
