“No one can serve two masters”
F Scott Fitzgerald once told Ernest Hemingway that “a man, torn between two women, will eventually lose them both.” A man torn between two messages has the same problem. So does a person who has two gods.
Somewhere in our lives we need to decide who we are and what we believe and then, most significantly, in whom we believe. To sit on the fence and fail to make a decision is in itself an act of denial. We will then, by default, tend to honour the weaker ‘god’ who appears to require less of a commitment from us and allows us to do what we want without calling it sin.
Values and beliefs are not merely a matter of words. They require to be lived out in the daily routine of our lives. Everything we do is quietly making the same statement, and bearing witness to the same truth, about us.
In human terms success, honour, and loyalty require both commitment and perseverance. For the Christian our ‘success and honour’ has been bestowed upon us by God in Jesus Christ. Loyalty is the description of the way in which we respond and live out our new relationship and identity. This is loyalty to the Lord and to His teachings and wishes.
“For I desire loyalty and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings”
(Hosea 6:6 HCSB)
Eve listened to the lie and, with Adam, lost everything for themselves and for us. Jesus listened to the truth and gained everything for Himself and for us. The world generally is listening to the wrong voice – we don’t have to go that way with them.
To every man there openeth
A Way, and Ways, and a Way,
And the High Soul climbs the High Way,
And the Low Soul gropes the Low,
And in between, on the misty flats,
To rest drift to and fro.
But to every man there openeth
A High Way, and a Low.
And every man decideth
The way his soul shall go.
What is my decision about who and what I am
Lord God please help me to not be a drifter in this precious gift of life. Help me Lord to clarify my foundational beliefs with You and to live accordingly in the strength and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
