Moses said to the LORD … “You have said, `I know you by name and you have found favour with me.’ If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you”
The Lord chose Moses before he was born, and God was pleased with him notwithstanding his hesitations and lapses. Now that Moses had been walking with the Lord and developing a relationship with Him he asked God ‘to teach me Your ways so that I may know You and continue to find favour with You.’
The heart of the matter is that God chooses us. As we respond positively to Him it pleases Him. Then the way to know Him better and to continue to please Him is to live the way that He directs. To do this we need to find out how He wants us to live. This is where Scripture and the Holy Spirit are so important – for the Scriptures are inspired by the Spirit who, Jesus tells us, will guide us into all truth.
Compare this with Jesus Himself. He responded to God by being baptised in the Jordan by John. This pleased God who immediately affirmed Him and filled Him with the Spirit. Jesus followed the Holy Spirit into the desert and then into the three years of His ministry. During this time He taught His disciples that He did only what the Father showed Him and spoke only the words that the Father gave to Him. He was committed to God and to His ways.
What was good for Moses and for Jesus will be the way that is right for us as well. To know God better – to have a deeper relationship with Him – comes through having faith in Him and trusting His love. We do this by living in the way that He shows us through the Scriptures and in personal guidance where we need it.
Ask God for guidance. Read and follow His directions.
Your Word Lord is a lamp to my feet – please help me to walk in Your way and to do it Your way. Amen.
