And I said …

“Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant,
then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.”
(Exodus 19:5)

Reflection:
The moment of choice had arrived.

When God made man He gave him the freedom to choose and a command to be obeyed.

Now, when God had set the Israelites free from their bondage in Egypt and showed them something of His might, power and love, He again gave them the freedom to choose. They could be His people or choose to be their own masters and go off by themselves. Again the condition was that they do things His way by full obedience to His commands.

The Israelites committed themselves to Him in words – but Scripture would show that they did not live out their commitment. In reality the majority of them had not really made a choice for God at all. As a result most of them would never enter the Promised Land but would die in the desert. It was an inconceivable sadness.

Later, Jesus would come with another offer. This time it was for people to put their hope and faith in Him as the divine Saviour. He offered love and grace instead of the requirements of the law. However, the mark of our acceptance of His love and salvation would be that we would live this new life in His way and not our own.

“If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.” (John 15:10)

To neglect or disobey His commands would be a rejection of Him as the Way, the Truth and the Life.

That is not to say that those who try and fall are rejected by God. Not at all! As we ask for forgiveness He is there to help us up again and to support, strengthen and encourage us as we continue our journey with Him. In the process He deepens our relationship with Him.

We do, however, have to ask ourselves whether our Christian walk is one of lip-service or life-style.

Response:
Cam I commit myself to the Lord for the year?

Prayer:

Father God I want to want to commit myself fully into Your Love and Life. Please help me. Amen.
