Messengers of God

“Grace and peace be yours in abundance
through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.”
(2 Peter 1:2)

Reflection:
One of the many things that I love about God is that He is a God of abundance. I was reminded of that again when five peacocks suddenly paid us a visit one morning! There is nothing mean or close-fisted about Him. On the contrary He seems to enjoy being lavish in His love and in His provision.

Think for a moment of the feeding of the 5000, when there was more collected after everyone had eaten their fill than there had been at the beginning. Then there is the death of Jesus on the cross when He died for all the sins of all people for all time, through all the yesterdays, todays and tomorrows. When Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit he did not tell us that we could interact with Him for one short moment in time. The reality is that every believer can have fellowship with Him for every moment of their lives, without any gaps.

Paul in his letter to the Ephesians became quite lyrical over the reality of God’s love that he had discovered for himself.

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:17-21)

And now Peter also talks about the abundance that comes from God – that of grace and peace. These are a result of our knowing God as opposed to knowing about Him. Just as Paul, through His discovering the reality of Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus, was able to then appreciate the wonder of God’s incredible love – so we, the more we discover of the reality of the majesty, power and love of God, will find that His grace and peace begin to grow within us. To know of someone does not result in relationship – to know them does.

May we all go deeper and deeper into the reality of this relationship into which we are called and, through our responding trustingly to the directions that He gives us, discover more of His love and faithfulness in every area of our lives.

Father, please open my eyes to Your great love and help me to know more of your grace and peace – in Jesus name. Amen.
