Revelation not Imagination

“Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him”
(Matthew 26:3-4)

Reflection:
Lord, knowing the story, it’s so easy to read these words and then pass on. And yet they are stunning in what they reveal and imply.

These were the religious leaders of the day. Not just any religious leaders but those supposed to represent the Lord God Almighty, the God of the Israelites, the God of whom You spoke as Your God and Father. And here they were plotting – not merely to discredit You but to kill You!
Many of them were the same people who, not able to deny Your miracles, would criticise You for performing miracles on the Sabbath. They just did not want to recognise and acknowledge You for who You really were. You were disturbing their comfort zones. So the God who had said that they should not have any other gods found Himself rejected in favour of their image.

And yet similar things still happen today. People will not recognise You for who and what You are. And even within the Christian Church we do not all agree about You, and Your Gospel and Your teaching. It seems that we want to clothe You with an image that is acceptable to us, in our context, and to deny that You may be different or even far more than we can think, desire or imagine.

It makes me wonder sometimes where the areas are where I have created You in an image of my own. Have I given You a mask to wear – instead of allowing You to be You and then to seek to be more like You?

You are not a God of imagination but of revelation. Lord show me more of Your truth.
