“I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.”

(John 14:6)

Reflection:
In one of His most remarkable sayings Jesus reveals that He is everything that we will ever desire and need. He takes ‘three of the great basic conceptions of Jewish religion’ and claims that they are fully realised only in Himself.

Much was said in the Jewish teachings of the ways of God and the way in which people should live. For example,

“So be careful to do what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. Walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you” (Deuteronomy 5:32-33)

• “And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness” (Isaiah 35:8)

Jesus now taught that He was the complete revelation and expression of the Way and the ways of God. In Him was the Way of life and the way to live that life, as well as both the full expression of life and its ultimate and eternal destination.

Humankind continually searches for new and ultimate truths. The Psalmist recognised this need when he cried,

“Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth” (Psalm 86:11)

Jesus reveals to us that all truth is to be found in Him. He is the source, the revelation, the beginning and the end, and the fullest expression of all that is wonderfully and perfectly true.

Humans treasure their lives and continually seek for more from life. The Psalmist says,

“You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”(Psalm 16:11)

Jesus says simply ‘I am the Life.’ He is the Source of life, the Sustainer of life, the Giver of Eternal Life, the Resurrection into life, and the expression of all that Life is meant to be.

Of great significance is that Jesus is not just telling us that direction, information and living comes from Him – as if He was a dispenser of such things. He reveals that in His Person and Being He is all and everything that we might possible need or desire, both now and throughout eternity. At the very heart of everything is Love. And Love is not a concept but a Person – revealed to us in Jesus Christ.

He invites us into a relationship with Him that will accept all this and live accordingly.

Response:
Seek more of Jesus Christ in every part of life

Prayer:

Lord please touch my life with Your life and lead me into a deeper relationship with You. Amen.
